The higher illiteracy
All knowledge of the idiomatic use of our language is vanishing. Following are examples seen in print in the past few days in reputable publications: free rain or free reign for free rein, step foot for set foot, and beckon call for beck and call.

Is this a case of not understanding the saying or just being so lazy that they think spell checkers can pass as editors? My favorite was the front page of Garden.com's first (and possibly last) print catalog which raved about the new "Princess of Whales" rose.
Family members of the younger generation often say it's a doggy dog world not comprehending the meaning behind a dog eat dog world--I'm guessing because of Snoop Doggy Dogg.
It must have something to do with never having seen a given word or expression in print and being familiar with it only as spoken. There's not much sense of the reality behind figures of speech.
